DOYEN OF THE ALKALIS Malam Abubakar was born circa 1876 in the Gombe district of the oldbauchi province. He received his training in Islamic Religous Knowledge and Juris prudence in the traditional way from parents and other learned mallams. He rose to become a respected juristandArbiterin this home place Gombe. In 1906, he was appointed Alkali of his own district of Gombe by the Colonial officers until 1932, when he was appointed to the important post of chief Alkali of Jos. Forthis, he was officially recognisedas the Moslem Jurist with the congest practical experience of judicial work for the same reason, Alkali Malam Abubakar was awarded in 1956 with the Certificate of honour as the most deserving all Islamic Jurists. He was also in recognition of his learning and powers, that the then Governor of Northern Nigeria, selected him to be a member of the established Moslem Court of Appeal of Northern Nigeria; as a man of veneration, respected, upright,just and experiences. Alkali Malam Abubakar was generally acclaimed as the previous rank between the past and the present especially considering experience and developments in the judicial system in Northern Nigeria. To the British courts operating then in the region, he embodied all parts of the judicial system whose road ran parallel with theirs and as a lasting tribute to the man's honour, the British Colonial officers never stopped revering him for his ideas of justice, his high standardof integrity and'administeringjustice anda man whose life wasan example of adding 'doingright'.
