EKPETE, Prof. Dennis Mkpalata

Professor Dennis Mkpalata Ekpete AnambraState Commissioner for Agri culture and Food Production, was born January 8, 1936 and hails from Mgbowo in Awgu Local Government Area. He had his early education in St John's School, Mgbowo between 1942 and 1949. He gained admission to Government College, Umuahia in 1949 and had a Grade 1 in the Cambridge School Certificate in 1955. Between September, 1955 and June 1960, he was a student of the Univer sity College, Ibadan from there he later gained admission to the Imperial College, University of London (Octo ber 1960 - March 1963). Professor Ekpete bagged the B.Sc. with honours in agriculture; Ph.D. in Agricultural Chemistry (Soil Chemistry) and the D.I.C. also in Agricultural Chemistry. Professor Ekpete rose from post of lecturer to Reader and Head ofDepart ment of Soil Science at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, 1963-65). From October 1975 to September 1976, he was Reader and Dean, Faculty of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine of flie University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He later became professor (as well as dean) in October 1976 and was acting Vice-Chancellor of the University between July 1977 and September 1977. From August, 1978 to Septem ber 1979, he was Professor and Head, Department of Soil Science (Univer sity of Nigeria,Nsukka). Professor Ekpete is a member of about nine agricultural and science professional bodies, including the International Soil Science Society. His international listings include Who's Who In The World; Who's Who In Agriculture, Who's Who In Africa, International Who's Who in Education, International Biography and Who's Who In Community Service. He is Chairman and or member of several statutory bodies, including the national Universities Commission. Professor Ekpete is married with eight children.
