(N/9) COMMANDING OFFICER FOURTH BATALLIONNIGERIANARMY Abogo Uirgema was one of the four Northern Officers kilkd during the January 1966 coup d'etat whkh ako claimed thelivesof some of the most important Nigerians including Sir Ahmadu Belk, the Sardauna of Sokoto, Premier of the Northern Region and Sir Abubakar Tafawa Bakwa, Nigeria's first and only Prime Minister. Abogo Largema, aMargi fromDamboa in Southern Bomo was bom on the 1(fof Novemberin 1933. In 1937, be went ioBamaEkmentarySchoolandBomoMiddkSchooltill1943andtotheprestiffousKaaunaColkgefrom1945to 1950. On the 2T ofJanuary 1951, hejoinedkague of Nigeria's men of unshaken vakur, courage and gallantry as he enlisted into the Nigerian Regiment of the Royal West African FrontierForce (RWAFF) at the Zaria Trainina Depot andwas commissioned on the 1? of February 1954. Before then, he hadmilitary trainingin some ofthe belt institutions of the world. He went for the PRS OCTUatthe West African Cadet Training Schoolfrom June to November 1951; Officer Cadet Training, at the Officer Cadet School Eaton Hall from January to April 1952; officer Cadet Training at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst U.K, from April 1952 to February 1954Signallnstruttor'sCourseattheNo. RSL 23 at the Signal Wing of the School of Infantry, Hythe, from September to December 1957; Battalion Intelligence Course at the Headquarters NMF Apapa, Lagos in Oaober 1958 and Coy Commander's Course 112 at Warminster from June to August 1960. He was ako at Staff College Kimberly from January to December 1963. Abogo Urgema armed with suffiaent quality military training rose in accordance to those training in his military career. He was 2Lt on 2? of February 1954; Lt. on1of February 1956; Temporary Captain on? of August 1959; Acting Major on 18"'November 1960; Substantive Major on 24* February 1963; substantively. Col. on 23* September 1963. Other special distinctions, medal and awards are the United Nations Medal, Congo; Forces Star Medal. He ako hadthe distinction of being in the f Battalion of the Nigerian Army thatperformed with superlative references in the Congo. He was then aCaptain. He actually became the T in command to then Major Maimalari in the "B» Company of the? Battalion in thefirstNigerian experience in the Congo. At the height of his military career, he became the Commanding Officer of the 4* Battalion of the Nigerian Army. He was one of the few officers, who had shown great promise of gallantry and courage and could be depended upon any time to defend the territorial integrity of theirfatherland. But he suffered martyrdom at the hands of afew disgruntledandjeakus officers in asensekss andone-sidedcoup on the if ofJanuary, 1966.
