LAWAN, Lt. Omar

FIRST COMMISSIONED NORTHERN OFFICER Omar lawan was born in Benisheik, old Bomo Province on the 24th of September 1932. He attended the Yvwa Ekmentary Schoolfrom 1937 to 1942, Borno Middle Schoolfrom 1942 to 1946, Kaduna College from 1946 to 1949 and the Elite Barewa Colkge from 1950 in that order. Omar Lawan was destined to be asoldier even if forashort period. He was among those selected with senior Cambridge School Certificate to train and get commissionedfrom Northern Nigeria. He framed according at the Regular Officers Training School in Teshie Ghana in 1950, the Royal Military Academy Sand Hurst UK in 1951 and the Officer Cadet School, Eaton also in the UK Thus he became thefrrst Northerner to be commissioned ahead of Zakari Mainmalari and Kur Mohammed. But he was ako destined to kave army before long an alteration with his white Officers caused him the sack from the army. ki~*~. OmarUwan then reverted to Distria Administration, serving as an Assistant Distna Officer '«feN<>rthrn Region from 1956 to 1958 and thereafter as Chief Preventive Superintendent of Customs from 1^1973. Folicwing reintroduction of party politics in the republic, hejoined the Great Nigeria Peoples Party (GNPP) and won an ekction into the Federal House of Representatives, representing Kaga Federal Constituency of Borno State. Thus Honourabk Alhaji OmarLawan compktedthe circk of service to the Community as the first Northern Commissioned Officer in the Army, Distria Administrative Officer and Politician.
