OGUNPOLA, MR George Akinola

the Ogun State Comissioner for Education was bom in Abeokuta on September 11, 1936 to Mr. Julius Ibikunle Ogun pola and Mrs. Marian Adekanla Ogun pola. Mr. Ogunpola who hails from Ifo/ Otta Local Government area of the State was education at the Central School Abelabi (194145) and the Owu African Central School, Ita Iyalode, Abeokuta from 194649. After his primary school education, the Commissioner took to teaching and proceeded to the African Church Teacher Training College, Ifako, Agege for the Grade 111 Certificate (1952-53) and the Grade 11 between 1955 and 1956. After a teaching spell between 1950 and 1959, Mr. Ogunpola joined the then Western Region Civil Service as an Executive Officer between 1959 and 1961. He then proceeded to the Univer sity of ibadan to study Economics and in 1965 obtained the B.Sc. (Hons) Economics from the University. Between September 1, 1967 and September 30, 1968, he was an assis tant lecturer with the University of Ibadan. Mr. Ogunpola later embarked on a Master's programme with the University of Ibadan and obtained the M.Sc. degree in Economics in 1968. Also in 1970, he obtained the M.A. degree in Economics from Manchester University, England Until his appointment as a Commis sioner, he was a Senior lecturer at the University of Ife. Mr Ogunpola had a distinguished academic career having obtainted in 1964, the Faculty of Social Sciences prize of the University of Ibadan, the Sir James Robertson's prize and medal for Economics in the same University in 1964, the University of Ibadan post graduate scholarship award between 1965 and 1967, the Unesco Fellow ship Award, 1966 (eight weeks) and - 1969-71, the Ford Foundation £50,000 Competitive award for Research in International Economic Order (with Drs. O. Ojo and Janet Farroqj in 1975, letter of Commendation by the University of Ife, Faculty of Social Sciences (Academic perfor mance) Review Panel (May 1976) and the letter of Commendation by the Appointments and Promotions Com mittee, University of Ife, (September 1977). Mr. Ogunpola as a lecturer partici pated actively in the affairs of the University. He was an Assistant Secre tary, Association of Ife University Teacher (AIUT) 1974-75, Vice Presi dent, AIUT (1975-76), National Secre tary, Academic Staff Union of Nige rian Universities, 1977 and a member of the Nigerian Economic Society. Mr. Ogunpola, a christian of the African Church Organisation Inc. is married with seven children. His hobby is farming.
