USMAN, Dr. Abubakar

Dr. Usman represented Ankpa North Consti tuency, Benue State, in the House of Representatives. He was a member of the Na tional Party of Nigeria. He was born on 27th November 1939 at Okaba Ankpa Local Government Area in Benue State. His father, Mr. Usman Jibilah is a farmer, while his mother, Omele Adejoh is a house-wife. Dr. Usman had his elementary education at Dekina Primary School from 1948 to 1954. For his post-primary education he attended the following school: Secondary School, Dekina, 1954- 55, Secondary school, Okene, 1956 — 1959, King's College Lagos, 1960 - 1961. He later studied in the University of Ibadan where he graduated in Economics in 1965. He obtain ed his Masters Degree from Williams College, Masachussets, U.S.A. in 1968 and a doctorate degree in Economics, from the University of Minnesota, U.S.A. Dr. Usman first worked as an Assistant Secretary in the Economics Planning Division of the Northern Nigerian Government from 1965-1967 and also as acting Principal Planning Officer in 1968, in Kwara State. He later became a lecturer at the Ahmadu Bello Univer sity, Zaria, from 1968 until he was elected member of the House of Representatives. He was a moslem and was married with four children. Dr. Usman was widely travelled and coun tries he visited include the United State of America, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda and the United Kingdom, he enjoyed reading and play ing lawn tennis.- He resigned his seat in the House on the 14th of December 1979, when he was appointed a Minister of State in the Ministry of External Af fairs. He lost his life in a plane crash while leading the Nigerian Delegation to the Island of Sao Tome and Principe on the 26th of May 1980. •
