Prof. Efiong David Akpan-Iquot had the spirit of resilience. He loved his community and state passionately. He showed this by inscribing on his car’s number plate: UYO, THE CAN-DO CITY; CROSS RIVER IS OK. And everyone knew him by that phrase.
However, he was not happy with how things were being handled in his beloved country. One statement he made about Nigeria 40 years ago still holds true today, "In other climes, people do things either the right or wrong way but in our country, our people do things in three ways - the wrong, right or Nigerian way.”
He was friendly and very jovial. Once, one naughty student took away his textbook; and when he came to the class, he sat down and started sharing some jokes. At the end of the hour, he announced, "Until the person who stole the Koran returns it, this is what you will have. No Koran, no lecture.” Of course, after everyone had joined in searching for the stolen book, it was discovered and returned to our dear lecturer; and lectures resumed!
To say the least, he was a very humorous lecturer. But his jokes were food for thoughts. Although he was the Head of the department then, he was not carried away by his position like some others in such positions in the same academic environment. He was quite accessible although he also had a way of messing with your names.
