OKEKE, Mr. Osita

Mr. Osita Okeke, Anambra State Commissioner for Education was born on December 10, 1936 and comes from Njikoka Local Government Area. Mr. Okeke started his primary edu cation in 1942 at St. Bartholomew's School, Enugu. He left the school after two years and enrolled as a pupil of St. Paul's Practicing School, Awka, which he also left in 1947. He later completed his primary education at his first school — St. Barth's, Enugu in August, 1950. In September of the same year, Mr. Okeke became a student of Go vernment College, Ughelli and passed the West African School Certificate examinaion in 1955 in Division I. He was admitted to the University of Ibadan in the following year, where he read physics obtaining the B.Sc. degree in physics in 1962. After graduation, Mr. Okeke be came a Science Master, first at Modebe Memorial Grammar School, Onitsha and later at Igwebuike Gram mar School, Awka. He then turned to journalism and worked as Senior Pro ducer (Sciences)Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation; Senior Producer, Eastern Nigeria Broadcasting Service and Prin cipal Producer, East Central State Broadcasting Corporation. Within this period, Mr. Okeke had a stint as a staff of Modern Aids to Education Centre, Enugu. From 1972, Mr. Okeke held several public offices including the post of Commissioner for Establishments,East Central State; Commissioner for Infor mation, Culture and Youth and Chair man, NYSC, East Central State. He was still holding the post when the army intervened in 1975 under Gene ral Muhammed. In June 1977 how ever, Mr. Okeke was appointed the Chairman of Nigeria Airports Autho rity before he was made the Commis sioner of Education, Anambra State asfrom October 1,1979. Among the courses attended by the Hon. Commissioner were UNESCO Course on the training of Trainers, Centre for Educational Television Overseas (CEDO)course on Educatio nal Broadcasting and Nigerian Broad casting Corporation courses. He is a fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations and a member of the Nigerian Union ofJournalists. Mr. Okeke is married with four cliildren.
