Professor Michael Umale Adikwu was born on 19th April 1963 in Amejo, Okpokwu Local Government Area. He started his education at St. Paul\u2019s Primary School, Utonkon between 1970 and 1975 before proceeding to Federal Government College, Jos in 1976. In 1981, Professor Adikwu graduated from high school as the overall best student at Federal Government College, Jos and in same year he gained admission to University of Nigeria, Nsukka to read Pharmacy.
\nAt Nsukka, he distinguished himself and his hard work paid off when he graduated in 1986 with a second class honours (upper division) Bachelor\u2019s degree. Professor Adikwu also obtained his Master\u2019s and Doctorate degrees from Nsukka in 1989 and 1994 respectively.
\nHe began his post-NYSC working career in 1988 with Benue State Health Services Management Board (HSMB) as a Hospital Pharmacist. Professor Adikwu was in the service of HSMB for a couple of years before joining the services of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka as a Lecturer II in 1990.
\nIn 1995, he had his first of two stints as Head of Department, a position he held until 1998, the same year he was made a Professor of Pharmaceutics. Professor Adikwu\u2019s second stint as Head of Department was between 2002 and 2004.
\nProfessor Adikwu who was a visiting professor working at School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at The University of Manchester, UK, has researched and worked on various aspects of pharmaceutical sciences, including health sector reforms as well as raw materials production from various agricultural and forestry products. He currently has over 170 research articles in both national and international Journals.
\nProfessor Adikwu has won research grants from many local and international bodies such as The Royal Society of Chemistry of Great Britain; The Third World Academy of Sciences; The International Foundation for Science, Sweden; The Raw Materials Research and Development Council, Abuja and The National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development, Abuja.
\nIn 2006, he was awarded the prestigious Nigerian Academy of Science\u2019s Outstanding Scholar in Science award for his research into the beneficial effects of snail mucin (a waste product usually washed away when snails are being prepared for cooking) for the topical treatment of wounds and burns. He is also the winner of the 2009 May and Baker Professional Service Award in Pharmacy.
\nIn February 2009, Professor Adikwu was elected Fellow of the prestigious Nigerian Academy of Science. He was previously the National Project Coordinator for Science and Technology Education Post-Basic (STEP-B) Project in the Federal Ministry of Education, Abuja
\nProfessor Adikwu has won many laurels in the course of his career. These include Associate of the Third World Academy of Sciences in Trieste, Italy 2008; Global Technological Entertainment and Development (TED) Conference Travel Fellowship, Arusha Tanzania, 2007; Alexander Von Humboldt Foundation Fellowship Germany, 1999-2000; Matsumae International Foundation Fellowship, Japan, 2002; Federal Scholarship for Best 20 Students, University of Nigeria, Nsukka 1982-1986; Federal Scholarship for Best 3 Students, Federal Government College, Jos to mention a few.
\nHe has also won quite a number of research grants both nationally and internationally such as the National Institute for Research and Development Grant in 2008; International Foundation for Science Grant, Sweden 2004; Royal Society of Chemistry of Great Britain Grant, 2002; Raw Materials Research and Development Council Grant, 1998 and the Third World Academy of Sciences Research Grant, 2004
\nProfessor Adikwu is an editorial member of 7 national and 2 international journals including, Journal of Pharmaceutical and Allied Health Sciences, Nsukka; African Journal of Pharmaceutical Research and Development, Nsukka; International Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences and the African Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Pharmacy. He is a member of 7 different Learned Societies such as: Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria; Institute of Public Analysts of Nigeria; Nigerian Association of Academic Pharmacists; and the Nigerian Academy of Science among others.
