Professor Aniekan Udoh Ekere was born on the 28th of January
\n1957 in EdemAya, Ikot Abasi, Akwa Ibom State to the family
\nof Sir (Obong) Gabriel Sampson Ekere and Mrs Anwanwa
\nGabriel Ekere. He is the first of nine children.
\nEducation: He attended the popular Regina Coeli Secondary
\nSchool, Essene, Ikot Abasi, 1970-1974 to obtain the West
\nAfrican School Certificate O\u2019 Levels and The School of Basic
\nStudies, College of Technology, Calabar, 1974-1976 to obtain
\nThe University of Cambridge A\u2019 Levels. After this he
\nproceeded to College of Medicine, University of Lagos, 1976-
\n1981, where he obtained the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor
\nof Surgery (MBBS) degree.
\nHe commenced the post graduate training in surgery at the
\nUniversity of Calabar Teaching Hospital in 1983, rising
\nthrough the ranks to become a Senior Registrar in
\nOrthopaedics and Trauma in May 1988. He completed the
\nresidency training in May 1990, being the first wholly
\ninstitution trained resident in Surgery there to bag the
\nfellowship of the National College of Surgeons of Nigeria
\n(FMCS).

\nMedical Study Fellowships:
\nApart from many exposures in Nigeria, he did a trauma
\nfellowship in Germany, powered by the AO\/ASIF (Association
\nfor the Study of Internal Fixation) in 1996 at Abt. Fur Unfallhand- und Wiederherstellungschirurgie Universitatsklinikum
\nUlm, Steinhovelstrasse 9, Ulm. In 2000, he proceeded to
\nLondon Health Sciences Centre, Ontario, Canada for Spine
\nSurgery exposure with a World Class Back Surgeon Dr
\nStewart Bailey. He also did an Interlocking Nail fellowship in
\nHospitaux Universitaires de Strasbourg, Starsbourg Cedex,
\nFrance, University Hospital in 2009, sponsored by Synthes.
\nHe also attended short sponsored causes in Davos Switzerland
\norganized by the AO group. He successfully completed the
\nBasic Trauma Course in 1996 and the Advance Courses in
\n1997 and 1998. He has been to several cities in four continents
\nof the World for medical conferences. In 2010 he attended the
\nEmergency Response training in the popular Tel Aviv Medical
\nCentre, Tel Aviv, Israel. So he has quite some international
\nexposure in his area of interest.
\nAcademic career and Leadership:
\nProf Ekere was first appointed Lecturer 1 in surgery, College
\nof Health Sciences, UNIPORT in 1992. He was promoted
\nSenior Lecturer in 2002 and the first full professor in Surgery
\n(orthopaedics and Trauma) of this great institution in April
\n2009.
\nHe has done quite some pioneering work in the field of
\nOrthopaedics and Trauma in Port Harcourt. His efforts with
\nthat of his colleagues have placed the University in the
\nacademic map of the world.
\nHe is the present Head of Department of Surgery in the
\nUniversity of Port Harcourt and The University of Port

\nHarcourt Teaching Hospital. He was a long serving member of
\nthe Housing Committee of the University, and presently a
\nmember of the Library Committee.
\nAcademic and Professional Service:
\nProf Ekere is an external examiner at MBBS (final)
\nexaminations to Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife and
\nUniversity of Calabar, Calabar. He is also an examiner at the
\nPart 1 & 2 levels of the National Postgraduate Medical College
\nof Nigeria.
\nHe has over the years been part of several accreditation panels
\nto inspect centres for postgraduate training in surgery from the
\nnational college.
\nHe was the founding editor of the Nigerian Journal of
\nOrthopaedics and trauma, 2002-2005, second editor of the
\nNigerian Health Journal, 2006-2009; and is still a member of a
\nfew editorial boards, and a reviewer for many national and
\ninternational journals.
\nResearch career:
\nProfessor Aniekan Udoh Ekere is an avid researcher and has
\nindeed had a fulfilling research career attested to by the
\nnumber and quality of his research publications in various
\nlearned journals and his membership\/fellowship of several
\nprofessional\/academic societies.
\nProfessor Aniekan Udoh Ekere has over 44 full length articles
\nin various national and international journals, 4 short
\ncommunication and letters to the editor. His area of interest has
\nbeen in road trauma and trauma related deaths. But he has also
\ndone a lot of work in chronic and challenging Orthopaedic
\nproblems in our environment, and presented the first report in
\n54
\nNigeria on total non cemented hip replacements in sickle cell
\npatients. He and his colleagues also proposed a simple neck
\ntraction device for cervical problems named the \u201cThe Skin
\nTraction Kit Cervical Collar hybrid Appliance\u201d. He and his
\nresearch group where the first in the world to report a
\nmalignant transformation from a chronic wound irritation in 3
\nyears.
\nHe is currently an AO alumnus, Member of the Nigerian
\nMedical Association, Member Nigerian Orthopaedic
\nAssociation, Member International society of Orthopaedic and
\nTrauma Surgeons (SICOT), Fellow National College of
\nSurgeons of Nigeria, Fellow West African College of
\nSurgeons, Fellow International College of Surgeons and
\nFellow Association of General Practitioners. He also has
\nseveral excellence awards from in and out of Nigeria.
\nOther Professional Responsibilities:
\nHe is the Medical Director, Rehoboth Specialist Hospital, Port
\nHarcourt and Chairman, Christian Help International
\nFoundation, a rural medical outreach ministry.
\nChristian Leadership:
\nProf Ekere is a Christian leader in Nigeria. He is the General
\nOverseer, Wings of Redemption Ministry, with branches in
\nAkwa Ibom, Rivers and Lagos States. He is The River\u2019s State
\nCoordinator, Intercessors for Nigeria. He is a Life Member,
\nFull Gospel Business Men\u2019s Fellowship International. He is a
\nregular conference speaker in local and international Christian
\nflora. He is an author of 4 Christian books; Pillars of Effective
\nPrayers, Foundational Strongholds, Standing Strong in Your
\nNight Seasons and Discipline: the key to Discipleship.

\nPrivate Life:
\nProfessor Aniekan Udoh Ekere is happily married to Mrs
\nPauline Aniekan Ekere and the marriage is blessed with 5
\nbiological sons; Emmanuel, Paul, Aniekan, Daniel, Joshua and
\nseveral other adopted sons and daughters.
\nProfessor Aniekan Ekere is a devoted, born again Christian of
\nthe Pentecostal inclination. He is a pastor and General
\noverseer, Wings of Redemption Ministry.
\nHe is interested in watching soccer, plays squash rackets and
