James Churchill Vaughan (1893-1937) was a graduate of the University who became a prominent political activist in Nigeria.<\/p>\n
Born in Lagos, Vaughan was one of the five foundation students at King’s College there. He came to Glasgow in 1913 to study Medicine, graduating MB, ChB in 1918. He returned to Nigeria where he set up a private clinic during the 1920s and introduced free medical services for the destitute.<\/p>\n
Vaughan was a vocal critic of the British Colonial Administration and was active in several nationalist organisations in Nigeria and the Gold Coast (now Ghana). In 1934, with other leading nationalists, he founded a political party called the Lagos Youth Movement, which became known as the Nigerian Youth Movement in 1936.
