He underwent various training in the Police, even while he gather experience. Applying all that he learnt, he had commensurate appointments and elevations as to higher police positions.

Because of his qualification, seriousness of purpose and dedication to duty, when the position of the ADC to the then Governor-General of Nigeria, the Rt. Hon. Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, was vacant, he was appointed ADC to the Governor-General.

It was Sunday Adebayo Adenusi who anchored the State Banquet Ceremony on the day Nigeria was pronounced a Republic. As the Master of Ceremony for the occasion, he performed so well to the admiration of all the guests, a performance that endeared him to the heart of the guests who honored him with a standing ovation.

In 1964, he traveled to the police Staff College in Scotland for an advanced training that qualified him for top management positions in the Force. He also traveled for studies on the operation of Force at East Ridding Constabulary, Lancashire, Yorkshire

He was appointed Commissioner of Police at a tender age of 32 and an Inspector General of police at the age of 45, even above those that were senior in rank to him.
