In 1944, he returned to Sokoto as the Chief Secretary to the Sokoto Native Authority and Chief Adviser to the Sultan. In quick succession, he was appointed a member of the Constitution Drafting Committee as one of the representatives of the North;a memberof the Northern Regional Development and Production Board; anda memberof the Northern Regional Loans Board. In 1951, hejoined the Northern Regional Government Executive Councilas Ministerof Works andina cabinet reshuffle in1953, be became theMinisterforLocal Governmentand Community Development and was designated the Leader of Government Business of the Northern Region. At the Nigerian Constitutional Conference held in London in1953, be was theLeaderof theNorthern delegation.
