He began his elementary education at Talata Mafara Elementay Schooland laterSokoto CentralElementary Schoolfrom 1933 to 1937from whereheproceededto SokotoMiddle Schoolandpassedoutin 1943. He was immediately sent to Zaria to the Famous Literature Bureau, which later became the Gaskiya Corporation tojoin lateAlhajiAbubakarIman, lateAlhajiMakama andMalamAbdulmalik ManiasSubs on the Gaskiya TaFiKwabo Editorial. AlhajiAbubakarremainedinthatcapacityuntilMay, 1948 when hewasappointed EditorofJakadiya aHausa reading sheetsponsoredby theAdultEducation Department. As amanfrom the rural area, hewasconsideredto bemoresuitabletosuchajobprobably becauseheunderstoodtheneedsof the ruralpeoplebetter. In 1951, came British Council'ssixmonths scholarshipforAlhajiAbubakar to studyphotography. Thatwas laterextendedby anothersixmonths bythe Trustees of theNorth SelfDevelopmentFundsmoney raisedvoluntarily and which was originally intendedto sendadelegation to the UnitedKingdom topressforfiftypercent representationfor the North in the FederalHouse. AlhajiAbubakarwas thefirst beneficiary of thatfund. Asaresult of this extension, he wasabletostudyJournalism. Onhisreturn, hewaspromoted'SeniorAssistantEditorGaskiya TaFiKwabo, theposthe helduntilDecember 1953, when hewaspromotedtheEditorof thepaper. In August, 1954, he was again to study his usualsubjeasjournalism andPhotography,for threeyears in the UK He wasPublicity Secretaryforthe Northern Students Union in the UnitedKingdom. He returnedto Nigeria in August, 1957. Though he studiedJournalism he however became VisualAids Superintendentandwas attachedto the North Regional Literature Agency, (NORLA). His knowledge of photograph stood him in good stead when considering him for the post of Visual Aids Superintendent. held the postfor less than one and ahalfyears. In 1959, Alhaji Abubakar Tunau was appointed Secretary of the then Northern Regional Development Corporation later called Northern Nigeria Development Corporation (NNDC) he worked until 1966, Immediately states were createdin 1967, he was appointedAssistant Secretary to the Interim Common ServicesAgency to shareassetsandliabilities ofthe oldNorthern Region. In the newly created North Western State, he became one of the trail blazers when he was appointed the Commissionerfor Establishments and Training, Home Affairs and Information, and later Trade, Industry and Cooperatives allbetween 1968 and 1975. Afterthe 1975 coup thattoppkdtheirgovernmenthejoinedthelmpresitBakolori (to buildthe BakoloriDam) sAssistantManagfngDireaorfrom 1977to 1979. He is currentlyamemberofthe Zamfara State CouncilofChiefs indeference to hisage andexperience in life. He was awardedthe MFR. on the 16th ofNovember, 2000 by the Federal Government in recognition ofhis outstanding virtuesandin appreciation ofhisservicetoNigeria. The title Kayqyen Sardauna wasgiven to him by the Late Premier Alhaji Sir Ahmadu Bello, Sardauna of Sokoto.
