Alhaji Lawal Mohammed was born at Tsanyawa-Bichi Local Government Area, Kano State on April 20, 1948. He attended the Tsanyawa Junior Primary School between 1955 and 1958 and the Dambata Senior Primary School from 1959 to 1960. When he left the Provincial Secondary School in 1965, he joined the Nigeria Police Force as an Assistant Inspector-in-training at the Kaduna Police College in 1966. He abandoned the course after the Army take-over because of the instability in the country. In 1967 the Kano Local Education Department employed him as a temporary Teacher at Grarui Primary School. He later joined the Bank for the North Limited as a clerk at its branch office in Kano.
