PROVINCIAL COMMISSIONER KATSINA Mallam Salihu Muhammed Gonto was bom in 1928 in West of the old Plateau province. He went to Wase Ekmentary schoolfrom 1938to1942and the Adamawa Yola Middk schoolbetween1942and 1947. Like most of his peersat that time he started work immediately after his middk school eduction. He jointed the Lowland NA Veterinary department asa Veterinary Assistant andfrom 1947 to 1956. He then joined the Wase NA where he servedasthe Councilorsforfinance and Natural Resources between1957and 1959. Meanwhik Salihu Muhammed Gonto hadjoined the political consciousness group of his area and later joined Northern peopks Congress (NPC) under which he rallied his peopk for quick political development and enlightenment. He contested the federal ekction of 1959 into House of.Representatives only to lose to UMBCs SolomonLar. Undauntedly, he contested theNorthern House of Assembly seat in 1961 from Wase /BarikiLadi and won. Barely ayear later, when the Sadauna wanted people of honor and integrity, people of outstanding administrative Ipolitical abilities to man the newly created strataof regionalgovernment i.e provincial administration Salihu Mohammed Gonto was readily employed to joint august assemblage. He was appointed provincial commissioner in charge of Katsina. Together with twelve others, they performed the job with dignity thereby strengthening and justifying the Sardauan'a decision to appoint provincial commissioners to serve as major links between the provinces and regional government. Alhaji Salihu Mohammed Gonto served in that capacity until the brutal coup of 1966, which terminated theirgovernment and the lives of someof the most important Nigeriansof all Times.
