O.F.R, M.H.A., SARKIN MASKA, MINISTER OF WORKS He was born in 1925 in Maska in thepresent Katsina State. He started his education atthe age of eight in Bakori Elementary School, where he spentfouryears. He left behind him avery outstanding record in his studies and sports in thejuniordivision. He enrolledin the KatsinaMiddle Schoolwhere he showedkeen interest in English, which was hisfavourite subjea. Hepassed out of in that schoolin 1940. Hejoinedhis NativeAuthority immediately after leaving schoolandwas madeDistriaScribeforMalumfashiandKaita Districts. The ability and sense of responsibility whixh he showed during his shortspell of work with the Katsina Native Administration soon movedhim nearerto hisfather Sarkin Maska- Malam Muhammadu Sambo who made him his deputy. It was an opportunityfor Shehu who, on many occasions, had aaed successfullyfor hisfather. He was in this capacity between 1944 and 1946. Though he has been made aVillageHeadsince 1944 he usedto aain severalsections ofhisNativeAuthority wheneveroccasions calledfor it. Asatoken of his hardwork andhispushfulness, he wassekaedamong otherpeople in 1952 to attendaSummer School in Zaria on Local Government System. In March, 1953, he attended another Course, but this time itwas the popular"Leadership Course" of theMan 0'WarBay in Viaoria, Southern Cameroons. 1955sawhim in the United Kingdom, where he went with ateam of Local Government Officials on astudy tour under the auspices'of the British Council. The title of Galadiman Maska was conferred on him in 1948 as arewardfor selfless service when he was under hisfather. He won an election to the Northern House of Assembly in 1956 under the NPC and was subsequently appointed Minister of InternalAffairsfrom December 1956. In acabinet reshuffle which took effeafrom f June, 1965,AlhajiShehu wasmovedfrom InternalAffairsMinistry to thatof Works. He remainedtheNorthemMinister of Works untilFebruary 1966 when theirgovernment was sacked in asenseless coup which also termintedthe lives of some very important Nigerians including the Premier of Northern Region, Alhaji SirAhmadu Bello, Sardauna of Sokoto. Like most of his colleagues, Alhaji Shehu went back to Native Administration after the coup and sack of Government. He latersucceededhisfatheras theSarkinMaskatheposition he helduntilhis death. He diedon6thNovember, 1968.
