OBE, OFR, CFR SHETTIMAN SOKOTO, LL.D SECRETARY NORTHERN NIGERIA EXECUTIVE COUNCIL NORTHERN PERMANENT SECRETARY, COMMISSIONER FOR ECON. DEV. & AGRIC Yahaya Gusau was born in 1916 in Gusau town. He had his primary education at the Gusau Elementary School from 1927 to 1929. He was in Sokoto Middle School, from 1929 to 1931 and Katsina Higher College from 1931 to 1936. During this period he made acquaintance of many distinguished Nigerians such as the Late Alhaji Sir Ahmadu Bello, Mallam Sa'adu Zungur, Alhaji Aliyu Makaman Bida, to mention but a few, thereby becoming one of the forerunners in the political activities of Nigeria who successfully carried the country to independence in 1960. He took up his first teaching appointment at Kano Middle School from 1936 to 1941. After five years, he was transferred to Bauchi Middle School where he put in anotherfiveyears from 1941 to 1945. In recognition of his diligence as a teacher, he was selected to study abroad from 1945 to 1946 on a certificate programme in education, organised by the University of London. Yahaya Gusau was one of the firstfourNortherners to benefit from such a programme. On his return from the UK he went back to teachingandwaspostedto Kaduna College, nowBarewa College. During this period a number of distinguished Nigerians were students of Yahaya Gusau, like General Yakubu Gowon, Late Major Gen Hassan Usman katsina, Late Mallam Aminu Kano and Professor Umar Shehu. This shows the influence of, and the contribution Alhaji Yahaya Gusau has made in the training of prominentNigerians. After about fifteen years in the classroom thisgreatson of Nigeria moved to the area of Educational Planning and Administration, first as Councillor for Education in Sokoto, 1951 to 1955, then briefly as Education officer in theNorthern Nigerian Government. Yahaya Gusau occupied various key positions in Government; these positions included Secretary to the Northern Nigeria Executive Council, Kaduna 1959; Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Internal Affairs 1960, and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of justice, 1961 to 1962. In 1963, he heldthepostof Provincial Secretary in theMinistry of Lands and Survey. With the advent of the military in the governance of the nation, Yahaya Gusau was called upon to serve Nigeria in her hour of need At this period, he served as the Federal Commissionerfor Economic Development and Reconstruction, Agriculture and National Resources from 1967 to 1970. He returned to Kaduna as chairman, Northern States Marketing Board between 1970 and 1977^ and worked relentlessly to put back the organisation on the pathof prudence and probity. Duringthe same period, he occupied various positions-Chairman, Kaduna Textiles, 1970 to 1979; Chairman, Nigerian Civil Aviation Training Centre, Zaria, 1970 to 1973; Chairman, NEPA, 1977 to 1979; Director, Shell Petroleum Corporation of Nigeria, 1978 to 1985; Pro-Chancellor, Universityof Sokoto, 1984 to 1985; Pro-Chancellor Bayero University, Kano 1986 to 1992. In 1991, he was appointed the Chairman of Arewa House Board of Trustees and Chairman, Sokoto State DevelopmentFund Board of Trusteesin 1991. Notlonglater, he was appointeda memberof thePetroleum TrustFund under the distinguished Chairmanship of General Muhammadu Buhari (Rid). Asa manifestationof his greatness and immense contributions to the developmentof our nation, this gentlemanisa holder of several awards, national and international: Orderof the Federal Republicof Nigeria (OFR), Orderof theBritish Empire (OBE), Commander of the Orderof the Federal Republic (CFR), Honorary Doctorof Lettersof University of Lagos, Honorary Doctor of Lawsof three Universities; Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Universityof Ibadan and Bayero University, Kano, Honorary Fellowship of Kaduna Polytechnic. Among the traditions which we have inherited from our forebears, and which we intend to transmit topur descendants, there is none that we prize more highly than respect for lawful constituted authority. our evolution will be tranquil and orderly.
