He was for many year a leading Trade Unionist until 1979 when he was elected into the National Assembly representing Ifo/Ota constituency on the ticket of the Unity Party of Nigeria, U.P.N. Chief Oduntan started schooling at a very tender age. He attended St. James School Lagos from 1949-1953. -On the completion of his secondary school education, he worked as a Merchant Navy Seaman from 1954 to 1959 when he entered into trade unionism. • *...«. Between 1960 and 1966, Chief Oduntan was the Assistant General Secretary of Nigerian Union of Seamen. He became its General Secretary from 1964 - 1968. He also became the General Secretary of both A.G. Leventis and Associated African Workers' Union. Both Unions were later integrated into the National Union of Shop and Distributive Employees of Nigeria. Chief S. A. Oduntan attended various Trade Unionism and management courses at home and abroad. These included the Trade Union Institute Prague, 1967; British Government Technical Assistance Programme - Industrial Relations, London 1971; Nigerian Institute of Management 1974 and University of Lagos Continuing Education Centre 1975/76. His father, Mr. Nosiru Ogunremi Oduntan worked hard both as a farmer and businessman to support him in school. Chief Oduntan got married to the former Miss Olufunmilayo Olarewaju Akoni on 14th December, 1974 and they have five children. He has published many articles on Industrial Relations and Trade Unionism. He has also visited many countries in Europe, and America. His hobbies are reading and writing.
