Hewas born to the family of Chiefand Lolo Chukwu Okoronkwo Akachukwu of Amaoji Amaoku Amaukwu Autonomous Community of Alayi in the same Local Government Area. He worked briefly asa Clerk in Bende Local Government Council from 1980-1981 soon after his primary school. He later attended the College ofTechnology (now Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri) specializing in Quantity Surveying. He finished the compulsory National Youths Service and in the absence of any feasible Government the young Chukwu established a Construction Company in 1988, thus creating employment for himselfand others. Itisfrom this very personal business that Chukwu rose to limelight. He later decided togo into polities and won election asCouncillor representing Akoliufu Alayi. under the platform ofthedefunct National Republican Convention Party from 1991 1993. As a close associate of Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, the Executive Governor ofAbia State, Chukwu’s political exploits and career blossomed into great adventure. Until his election as the Executive Chairman ofthe Local Government, Chukwu served in the following capacities • Ward Co-ordinator, Oganiru People’s Movement Local Government Area Secretary of UNCP. 1997 1998 • LocalGovernmentArea Deputy Chairman, UNCP, 1999 • State Vice Chairman and Abia North Co-ordinator ofthe Reality Organisation, 2000 • Local Government Area Chairman of PDP, 1998 2003 All his efforts and positive contributions have now yielded fruits and elevated him tothe position ofExecutive Chairman ofthe Bende Local Government Area. Positive achievements in Office Within the first year in office, High ChiefChukwu initiated and completed the following projects Three local bridges in the Local Government Area. Construction of 15 box culverts. Boughtone serviceable caterpillar for construction works in the LGA. BoughtRoad Grading Machine for regular road maintenance in Bende Local GovernmentArea. Renovated 3 blocks of over 12 classrooms at the Secondary Commercial School Alayi. Renovated a Technical Workshop razedto the ground by fire at Comprehensive Secondary School OkokoItem. Reconstruction ofthe Ozuitem Secondary SchoolAssembly Hall also razed by fire in 2001. Tarred the Bende Secretariat Ring Road. Sustenance of Peace/Security within the entire Local Government Area of Bende. Promotion of Youth Programmesand Employmentof 100jobless youths. Renovation of Council Hall and refurbished most office ofthe Council. Distribution of over 112 motorcycles to indigenes of Bende Local Government Area under his Free-interest Revolving Loan for Credit Financing of local industries. Renovation ofNtalakwu Health Centre. Establishment of Laboratory for the diagnosis and procurement of hospital equipment for Umuenyere Alayi Health Centre and other Health Centres in Bende. Donation of over Three Million Naira to some Communities for their self-help projects. Installation of seven electricity transformers in Item, Igbere and Alayi Communities. Cultivation of 35, 000 yam seedlings to farmers for 2006 farming season. Distribution of40 handsets and lines to key saff of Bende L.G.A. Establishment of snail farm and cultivation of 10,000 pineapple suckers. Drilling of 3 boreholes in Bende and Uzuakoli. Sustenanceof cordial working relationship and prompt paymentof salary to workers in the LGA. Theabove Litany of Achievements is worthyof praiseand emulation. It is a markof good leadership and people-centred administration. ChiefChukwu’senviable record of achievements has not passed unnoticed as people from many places includingmany communitieshave honoured him with several Chieftaincy Titles. Some reputable National Organisations have equally acknowledged thisgreat man’sachievements andcommitment to service to his people. Awards and Honours Chief Chukwu has been honoured by organisations like Nigeria Media Link with the prize of The Overall Most Recognised Media Executive Chairman inAbia State onGood Governance Media MindCommunications Ltdgave him, The Best Local Government Chairman in Nigeria Merit Award of Best Chairman in Abia State- Rotary Club of Abakpa Nike Urban BestChairman in Community ServiceinAbia State, Rotary International District 9140 Best Performing Chairmanin CommunityService,Abia State Best Performing Local Government Chairman in Community Service in Abia State from the 2005 Assessment ofthe Leaders and People’s Forum of Nigeria High Chief Chukwu again received the Golden Merit Award for Good Leadership Development Achievements from the Prime International Communications Ltd, in August, 2005. • Invested with theGrand Defender of “PeaceandSafety”of Bende bythe Iwuanyanwu Nationale Ambulance Organisation. • Best Chairman on Personnel Commitment and Provision of logistics forthe 5Ih Round ofthe 2004NPI inAbiaState. • Merit Award fortheBest LGA Chairman from South East Geo-political Zone ofthe Country from theNGO/MED1 Mentors Communications Ltd in Nigeria.
