Essien Essien ETUKUDO

Barrister Essien Essien Etukudo started his public service in 1974 at the then Southern Eastern State, Ministry of Information Assistant. He later joined the then South Eastern Newspaper Corporation as a Reporter of the Nigerian Chronicle Newspaper covering activities in then Opobo Division of the State (now Ikot Abasi). To improve his skill and proficiency in the field of journalism, he attended the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ) Lagos from 1974 to 1976. Under the watchful eyes of Mr. John Lapey, a prolific Australian Journalist as the Director of the Institute, he obtained a Diploma in Journalism. He served at the Nigerian Tribune Newspaper for his industrial attachment. Due to his performance and sterling qualities at the NIJ, Mr. Lapey, recommended him to the then famous Daily Times Newspaper as its Reporter/Sub-Editor from where he was invited by Southern State Newspaper Corporation to be the Chief Sub-Editor of the Nigerian Chronicle Newspaper. to join the Cross River Basin Development Authority as her pioneer Public Relations Officer. At the Authority he held increasingly several senior management positions including Senior Public Relations Officer, Principal Public Relations Officer and Assistant Chief Public Relations Offocer. Barrister Essien studied Law at the University of Calabar between 1987-1992 and was admitted to the degree of Bachelor of Laws(LL.B) Honours Second Class (Upper Division) on completion of the programme of study. He attended Law School in 1993 and was called to the Nigerian Bar on 16th December, 1993. He returned to the Cross River Basin Development Authority to become her Secretary/Legal Adviser and later promoted to the position of Assistant General Manager (Administration and Finance) a position he held until he was appointed the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Authority by the President and Commander-in Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan in January 2011. Following this position, he sat on the board of the Authority as a member. Barrister Essien bowed out of the Public Service of the Federation in October 2011 after 35 years of meritorious sevice. He is currently in Private Practice as a Legal Practitioner in Calabar, Cross River State as the managing Partner of Lex Arbitri Partners, a firm of Negotiators, Mediators, Arbitrators and Legal Practitioners. After retirement, he undertook Professional Courses in Negotiation, Mediation ass well as Arbitration, he took and passed the requisite Professional Examinations and is now a professional Negotiator as well as Member of the prestigious and globally recognized Chartered Institute of Arbitrators(UK), Nigerian Branch. As evidenced above, Barrister Essien has over three decades of work experience with proven leadership ability at executive management and Board levels in both Private and Public Sectors. He started his working life at the lower rung and through determination, hard work, faith, personal initiative and courage steadily and carefully rose through the ranks, educating himself along the way, to retire at the peak as the Managing Director of the Cross River Basin Development Authority. As a member of five professional groups, he is a professional to the core. The above Situations afforded him the greatest opportunities to meet, mingle, share, gain and glean experience and lessons from all manners of people within and outside Nigeria as well as from Jobs handled or supervised over the years.
