MUHAMMED, Maj-Gen. Shuwa

NIGERIAN ARMY WAR COMMANDER OF THE FIRST AREA COMMAND Muhammed Shuwa was bom in 1933 in the Shuwa Distriaof the old Bomo Province. For education, he attended the Bama andKala Balge Primary Schook before going to the Bomo Middk Schoolin 1950. He ako went to the Government Colkge Zaria. Itwas at the Colkge that he began to devekp that independence of charaaer and quiet determination that were later to make him the military wonder boy he became. Unlike most boys of his age and time, he had no difficulty choosing the career best suitabkfor him. He had hisfirst phase of his military training at the Regular Officers Training School, Ghana in 1957. From Ghana he went to Sandhurst England for further military traininggraduating twoyears later with the rank ofa full Ueutenant. He was duly commissioned into the Nigerian Army thatyear. Lt. Muhammed Shuwa held various important positions in the Army before the bkody military coup of 1966. He was one of the lucky few Officers of Northern origin who escaped murder during the coup. Folkwing the appointment of Military Governors in 1967, be took over the Command of the f Battalionfrom then U. Col. Emeka Ojukwu and was based in Kano. He was later posted to Kaduna as Commanderof the 1 Brigade and folkwing theAburi meeting of tbe Nigerian Military kaders, he became theNo 1. Area Commander. HewasnowaLi. Col The rebellion in the Eastern States in May 1967 brought him graver responsibilities. He was appointed the Divisional Commander of the Federal Forces in theNsukka Seaor immediately war was declared. He was promoted Coknel on July 18, 196?justafter the capture of Nsukka andOgoja two rebel strongholds. He was meticukus, daring and calculating as he kd the first assault against Biafra as Commander of the First Division. He was respeaedfor his cool headedness and economic use of men and material in battk. The successof his troops within afew weeksof the war, attested to his military prowess and strategy. Under his command, rebel strong holdsfell rapidly to the federal troops. Asa true professional soldier Col Shuwa never rested on his oars until the Baifran War had been successfully brought to an end Later after the War and in new military government of Murtala and Obasanjo, Mohammed Shuwa then aBrigadier was named the Federal CommissionerforTrade. He retried in 1979 a Major General.
