OBANDE, Mr. Jacob Cheogbu MP

ODOJO OF IGUMALE, ITODO OF IDOMA LAND MINISTER OF ESTABLISHMENT Jacob Cheogbu Obande was born inIgumale, Idoma Division on June 14 1913. He was the son of the District Head of Igumale Chief Obande Ochigbo. J. C Obande started schoolat the Wesley Central School before proceeding to another Methodist School, this time in U^pakoli where he did Secondary education atthe Methodist College. Being the son of the District Head provided opportunities for service to the people which J.C. Obande exploitedfor the benefitof the entire populace. He taughtat Igumale Central School and Methodist School, Ito between 1930 and 1933. Hejoined the Nigerian Railway Corporation as Administrative Officer,from 1940 to 1950. He went into politics (Hejoined the popular Northern party (NPC)) to be able to represent his people at thefederal level. He succeededin doing thisin1959 when he won the Idoma South East Federal Constituency seat beating strong opposition from the A.G and the N.C.N.C. He was a member Northern Region House of Assembly 1951 -1954. He wasa memberof Idoma Local Government Councilfrom 19541956: Mr. J.C Obande served the country in different capacities. He was at various times Director, Nigerian Hotels Ltd, member, Nigerian Ports Authority. Executive Member of the Nigerian Branch of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association; member, Executive Committee of the Red Cross, Benue Branch, and member, Idoma District Council. Before his appointment asMinisterof Statein the Officeof the Prime Ministerin 1960, he was the Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister. In the same regime, he later servedas the Federal Ministerof Establishmenttill1966 when the government was overthrown following a coup de 'tat. He also servedasMinisterforMinesandPower, WorksandEconomic Development. He wasa memberofNigerian Parliamentary Delegation on EconomicTourof the Worldin 1963. At home,J.C Obande was the Ochojo of Igumale ndthe Itodoof Idomaland. His services were recalledin the Second Republic when he was made the Chairman of theNational Party ofNigerian (NPN) which won both the Federal and Benue State seatsof the Chief Executives. He diedin1992inhishomein Oturkpo.
