UCHE, Mrs. Offia-Nwali

he Anambra State Commissioner for Social Welfare,Youth and Culture, Mrs. Uche Offia-Nwali is a young woman of 33 years, having been born on July 2, 1946. SHe comes from Ezza Local Government area. After her primary school education, Uche as she is popularly called went to St. Monica's Girls School in 1959 and passed the WASC in 1964. She left for Britain in 1965 and studied for the General Certificate of Education (G.C.E.) at Bromley College Kent. She obtained the Advanced level papers in 1968. In 1969, she enrolled at the Council of Legal Education, London, where she read law and was called to the British Bar in 1971. She returned to the country the same year and enrolled in the Nigerian Law School, Lagos, and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1972. While Uche was studying for the G.C.E. examination, she also studied and obtained the Private Secretary's Diploma at Bromley College Kent. He law practice began in Britain after she was called to the Bar there in 1971. She was articled to a firm of olicitors as Articled Clerk. After she was called to the NigerianBarin 1972, she joined a fairly big Chambers in Enugu which she later headed for some yearsbefore her present appoint ment. Mrs. Offia-Nwali is a well known law reporter whoselawreports in the defunct Renaissance and for some time, in the Daily Starattracted large audiences for the papers.Thismay not have been surprising since Uche trai ned for Law Reporting and Research with Times Law Journal, London from 1970 to 1971. As a lawyer, Mrs. Offia-Nwali is a member of the British (English) Bar, member of the Nigerian Bar Associa tion for which she was Second Assis tant Secretaryfrom 1976-78, member of Commonwealth Barristers' Associa tion and member of the International Federation of Female Lawyers. She has attended several national and inter national conferences organised by these associations. From 1975-79, Mrs. Offia-Nwali was a member of the Enugu Local Government Council. Her appoint ment as Commissioner for Social Welfare, Youthand Cultureis regarded by those who know her as a culimnation of years of devoted service to the community as a voluntary social worker. Thus, because of her social welfare activities, Mrs. Offia-Nwali is a life member ofthe Society for the wel fare of the blind, life member of the national council of women's societies and the president of Anambra State girlsguide association. Mrs. Offia-Nwali is married to Senator Offia-Nwali and has three children.
