ONWUDIWE, Prof Ebere

held the same position at the Centre for Ethnic and Federal Studies of the University of Ibadan. He was the editor of defunct The International Journal of African Studies, previously, The Journal of Human Relations. Prof. Onwudiwe has edited, co-edited and authored 12 books on Africa including Afro-optimism: Perspectives on Africa’s Advances (Praeger, 2002), Nigeria’s Struggle with Democracy and Governance (University of Ibadan Press, 2004), Nigerian Federalism in Crises: Critical Perspectives and Political Option , (John Archer, 2001). He was co-writer of the African Governance Report published by the Oxford University Press. His most recent articles and reviews have appeared in Development Practice, Research in African Literatures, Transition, Current History, The Journal of Democracy. His public intellectual articles have been carried in Nigeria by Newswatch (where he was a columnist), Business Day (where he was a columnist), The Guardian, This Day, and in the US and Europe by Dayton Daily News, Columbus Dispatch, Cleveland Plain Dealer, Houston Chronicle, The Christian Science Monitor, New York Times, The International Herald Tribune, Los Angeles Times, and the Congressional Record of the United States Senate, to name few. He has given lectures and participated in seminars in many institutions in Africa, Europe and the United States including, The Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, The University of Ibadan, University of Nairobi, Kenya; University of London, (MSU program), Northwestern University, UCLA, Stanford University, Michigan State University, American University , Washington, DC; Harvard University and the State Department. Washington, DC, among many others. He recently gave the 10th Anniversary Lecture of Igbenedion University, Nigeria’s first private university in Okada, Edo State; and the 2013 Convocation lecture of Madonna University, Elele, Rivers State. He has also lectured at the prestigious LBS Breakfast Club, billed as an Executive Briefing for Chief Executives of the Private Sector and Top Diplomats in Nigeria. He has served as a consultant to USAID, The German Development Corporation, (GTZ), United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, (UNECA), NEPAD, and the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM). Prof Onwudiwe was the Chief Consultant on Community Relations to Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, 2009 to 2010. He also served as Training Consultant to the Government of Akwa Ibom State on Internally Generated Revenues (2010). He was the Chairman of the Discovery Cycle’s Technical Working Group for the Code of Conduct Bureau of Federal Republic of Nigeria (since 2011). Prof. Onwudiwe was a founding member of the Consortium for Development Partnership of Northwestern University and the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA). While at Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio, Prof. Onwudiwe helped to arrange state scholarships for 93 francophone Africa students, In 2001, he was awarded the national honor of Officier de l’Ordre du Mono (Officer of the Order of Mono) OOM, by the Republic of Togo. He is currently an independent scholar in Abuja, Nigeria, where he is a Distinguished Fellow at the Center for Democracy and Development, and a Member of Board of Advisers to the Chief Economic Adviser to the President of Nigeria.
