Joined UAC as a staff, Four years later in 1939, he moved on to the Union of Co-operative Societies as produce inspector. He went back to the UAC in 1945 and was deployed to Lagos. But the pull back home was irresistible. He left the services of the company in 1946 for Ibadan where he became actively involved in politics under the Egbe Omo Ibile, an umbrella of many local organisations, which he co-founded. Soon after, he joined the National Council of Nigerian Citizens (NCNC) and was elected the party’s Assistant Secretary, and later Vice-President of the national executive Committee. The man often dubbed the “Lion of the Coast” led his party to victory in the 1951 elections to the Western Regional House of Assembly in Ibadan.

National Council of Nigeria and Cameroun (NCNC) led by Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe. This historically great decision, in combination with his fierce intellect, character and charisma conferred on him, in keenly contested election, the office of the first chairman of Ibadan District Council (1954-55) the first Federal Minister of Social Services and Mineral Resources (1955-56); and a leader of opposition in the old Western Region House of Assembly (1956). He was also a member of Nigeria’s delegation to the 1957 London Constitutional Conference.

Other Relevant Information

One of the influential politicians to come out of the ancient city of Ibadan, the late Adegoke Adelabu was noted for his flagrant opposition to the ideals of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo. He demonstrated this with his continued membership of the defunct National Council for Nigerian Citizens (NCNC) when most of his colleagues joined AG; Adelabu is popularly called 'Penkelemesi' a parody for his famous phrase 'peculiar mess' used to describe the political events in the old Western Region. After independence, he was a minister of Natural Resources and Social Services under Tafawa Balewa,a position, from which he later resigned.
