Maryam Abacha was born in Kaduna on March 4, 1947. A native of Borno State, she is the daughter of Alhaji Sheikh Mahammad Jidah and Hajiya Ya Gumsu Nasara. She commenced her education at Tudun Wada Primary and U.N.A. Sabongari Primary School, Zaria and had the benefit of receiving her secondary education at Dala Girls' Secondary School, Kano. She got married to General Abacha, then a lieutenant, in December, 1965 and are blessed with nine children- six boys and three girls. Her marriage to an army widened her horizon considerably and exposed her to the complexities of the Nigerian society. As national president of the Nigerian Army Officers' Wives' Association (NAOWA), from 1985 - 1990, Maryam Abacha had to bring these experiences to bear on her responsibilities. Harnessing the resourcefulness of army officers' wives and their genuine patriotic feelings to further the interests of our association was quite in line with her vision of a united, peaceful and progressive Nigeria. During her tenure as its national president, NAOWA was at the forefront of the national movement for a self-reliant economy. The association launched several development efforts for the education and self improvement of womenfolk. It ran workshops, organised seminars and lectures for soldiers' wives in particular and other citizens. The association operated several farms and small-scale enterprises for the benefit of its members and the less-privileged.
