PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY, CHAIRMAN, NIGERIAN PORTS AUTHORITY AlhajiAhmadu Rufai was bom in Misau his home town in 1919. He attendedtheMisauElementary Schoolfrom 1925-1928andthe BauchiMiddle Schoolfrom 1928 -1936. Healso attendedthe Katsina Collegefrom 1936 -1938and laterthe Kaduna Collegefrom 1939-1940. On leaving school, he underwentacourse oftrainingforAgriculturalAssistants atthe College ofAgriculture, Samaru, Zaria between 1940 and 1942. After his training, he served in the Agricultural Development of Northern Nigeria in various capacities in the Northern Nigeria Department of Agriculturefor aperiod of 12years. After that long stretch of unbroken service, he resignedhisappointmentin December 1953 to establishabusiness on TransportandProduce buying. In 1956, he returnedto the CivilService andjoin theNorthern Nigeria Ministry ofAnimalandForest Resources, Veterinary Department as Hides and Skin Officer. Twoyears later he took up appointment with the Northern Region DevelopmentCorporation (NRDC) asaSeniorLoan Officerbetween 1958 and 1961 Due to pressurefrom his constituency, AlhajiAhmadu Rufai again resignedhisgovernment appointmentafter three years service andtook to activepolitics. In 1961, he was eleaed a member of the Northern House of Assembly. He was subsequently appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry ofAgriculture, Northern Nigeria in 1963, aposthe helduntilhis appointment as Chairman ofthe Nigerian PortsAuthority. He held thispositionfrom 1965 to 1966 when asection of the NigerianArmy struck in amilitary coup terminating thegovernmentandkilled'someprominentNortherners in theprocess. While in service, Alhaji Ahmadu also served as amember of the Federal Scholarship Board which gave him the opportunity oftouring extensively overseascountriesforthepurpose ofinterviewingapplicants. This tirelesspublicservantwas also on handbetween 1969 and 1976, when he was called upon to be Councillorinthe Misau LocalAuthority. Again, due to pressurefrom his constituency, he was elected to represent Misau Local Government Area in the 1977/78 Constituent Assembly where hejoinedotherpolitically mindedNigerians in the process off as hioninganewpolity. Following theformation ofPoliticalParties, hejoinedthe NationalParty ofNigeria (NPN) upon whose platform he won one of the five Senatorialseats ofthe then Bauchi State in 1979. He diedin 1984.
