OFR BANKING AND INDUSTRIAL POTENTATE Alhaji Shehu Malami ispopularly refereed to as "the Oxford man ". Was bom in Sokoto in 1937 and had his early education in Sokoto, Bida and Katsina. He attended various Colkges in Englandfor his GCE ordinay and advanced kvek. He ako hadadegree in lawfrom the Middle Temple, Undon. He had been aVisiting scholar at Wolfecon Colkge Cambridge andhas continued to be an Associate Member of st. Anthony's Colkge, Oxford In his early days, Shehu Malami worked asprivate Secretay and then as SpecialAssistant to Sultan Saddiq Abubakar III. He ako workedfor the BBC as abroadcaster. He served as amember of the Northwestern State Ucal Government Reform Commission. Though amember of the revered house of Usman Danfodio, itwas not as atraditionalist that he was most well known. He made his name as an astute banker. At various time he was Direaor of the Nigerian IndustrialDevelopment Bank; Direaor, Northern States Marketing Board; Direttor Nigerian Produce Marketing Company; Chairman of Union Bank of Nigeria between 1981 and 1987 after being aDireaor of the bankfor threeyears. Malami ako workedas a member of the Sokoto UcalAuthority Council and had infactfunctioned in various capacities in affairs concerning kcal government in Sokoto State. He was twice, amember of Nigeria's Constitution Drafting Committee; Chairman of tbe Assessment Committee of the Nigeria NationalMeritAward; and he was the Chairman of PZ Industries Nigeria. On the internationalsphere, he has been on the executive committee of the Nigeria USA Business Council. He has equally been amember of the InternationalAdvisoy Council of the World Economic Forum Foundation Geneva. He was also honouray Vice -President of the WestAfrican Chambers of Commerce, Industy, Agriculture andMines. In the industrialfieldAlhaji Shehu Malami hasparticipated in the establishment of many industries. For exampk, be took part in the establishment ofthe Sokoto Tanney of which he was aDireaor and shareholder. Thisprojea wasfollowed by the Gusau OilMill, where Groundnuts and Cotton were crushed He was ako the mainpromoter and Chairman of Nigeria Pipes, aKano based company, which specialised in makingplasticpipes. Then he branched off into brick making in 1976, when he startedabrick industy at Wumo to utilise the suitabk clay deposit availabk there. He was the Chairman of the brick industy as wellas theftrst bottling Company in Wumo known as Zaki Bottling Company. He akoparticipated in the establishment of afurniture company in Asaba now Delta State. Outside industrial capacitation, theprince ofthe Sokoto Caliphate has ako been on the Governing Council ofthe University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Agrateful nation has since recognised his worth by conferring on him the honour of the Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic OFR.
