-MHA PARLIAMENTARYSECRETARY Alhaji Umaru was bom of a Gwari parentage in 1933, in Erana, in Gwari Division. He attended Minna Ekmentary School in 1943, where he was rated as one of the brilliant boy. His credibkperformance earned him admission into Niger Middk School at Bida where he spent only threeyears instead of the normal four years as it was the case in the North. He was at the lastyearin the School made aHouse Perfea. LeavingMiddk School in 1951, he went straight to the old CkricalTraining Colkge at Zaria, where he successfully passed his exams. Hewaspostedto Veterinary Division Kaduna, Finance Section incharge of Vouchers, andin 1953 he was transferred to Katsina Veterinary Department and later in 1954 to Minna Veterinary Department as the Head of the Clerical Section. In 1957, he was transferred once again to Jos Veterinary Department. Andin order to ensure the smooth running of its Finance theformer Gwari Native Authority requested Malam Umaru to come back home and take up the delicate post of the Native Authority Treasurer. And having the interest of his country home at heart, he whokheartedly accepted the chalknge and so went to the Institute of Administration for aDipkma course where he worked hard and obtained his Diploma in 1959. He then went back home and was appointed the Gwari Native Authority Treasurer. And with the Native Authority Administration re-shuffkment he was made the Native Authority Councilkrfor Finance. He was nicknamed "the Magnate of the Gwari NativeAuthority Finance "because of his experience and honesty in dealing withfinance. In 1960, like many Northern Native Authority workers Umaru automatically plunged into politics and was eventually ekaed to the Northern House of Assembly from Minna North Constituency in 1961. Because of his useful contributions in the Northern House of Assembly, the Northern Premier, Alhaji Sir Ahmadu Bello appointed him Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Social Welfare and Co-operatives before he was transferred to the Ministry of Justice'. His devotion to duty has earned him respea among his colkagues in the Northern Region. After the coup he took up appointment with the Nigerian Railway Corporation (Northern Distria) Zaria as Distria Accountant in 1966. He was transferred to Lagos in the same capacity after the creation of more states. In 1976 he was appointed to twin positions of Chairman, Niger State Scholarship Board and Permanent Member of the Civil Service Commission. From there, the new Civilian government of Alhaji Shehu Shagari in 1979 appointed him the Resident Population Commissionerfor Niger State until their own government was toppkd by soldiers in 1983. Not done with him, tbe Federal Government again appointed him Chairman of the National Water Resources Institute, Kaduna in 1984to1987. Alhaji Umaru Erana was one of the elders who drew up the blue print for tbe establishment of the Niger State Trust Fund for the purpose of moving the state forward in which he remained aTrustee of the Fund He is ako a member of the Zakkat Committeeof Niger State. ...We shall not forget our young men and women in training overseas. Although they will not be with us, we shall most certainly be thinking of the,. For the, in the years to come, will we rely for the successful attainment of our next objective. That objective I can see clearly before me now. It is to secure and improve the health, prosperity and happiness of all our people without discrimination on grounds of tribe or creed; and finally, to establish our country maposition where it will bea modelof progress goodwill toleration andfreedom, not only to Africa, but to thewhole world."
