political scientist, author, journalist, educationist, orator, former Chancel lor of the University of Lagos; first President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and first indigenous GoverGeneral of Nigeria; Born at Zungeru, Niger State 16 November, 1904; Education: Church MissionarySocie ty Central School Onitsha, Hope Waddell Training Institute Calabar; Methodist Boys' High School Lagos; Storer College West Virginia (USA); Howard and Lincoln Universities where he read political science, did post-graduate course at the Univer sity of Pennsylvania; holds M.A., M.Sc, LL.D., D.Litt. etc., lectured at Lincoln University, 1931-34 before returning to West Africa to join in the struggle against colonial rule which was sweeping across that part of the continent; started career in journalism in 1934 as editor of Afri can Morning Post in Accra, Ghana (then the Gold Coast); founder and editor-in-chief of the West African Pilot 1934-40; became a member of the I e g i s I a t i v e Council in 1948 and in 1952, member of the Western House of Assembly; elected into the Eastern House of Assembly in 1954 and was the first Premier of Eastern Nigeria until his election into the House of Representatives in 1959; was Minister of Local Govern ment and Internal Affairs Eastern Region, 1955-57; sworn in as Presi dent of the Nigerian Senate January 1960, and as first indigenous Gover nor-General and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, November 16 of the same year—on thatsameday, was appointed Queen's Privy Coun cillor (PC) by Queen Elizabeth II of Britain — the first Nigerian to receive such an honour;in 1963,became the President of the First Republic of Nigeria; was Chancellor and Chair man, Council of the University of Nigeria Nsukka, 1961-66;Chancellor, University of Lagos, January 1972 — October 1975;greatsportsenthusiast — former president Lagos and Dis trict Amateur Football Association, former president Nigerian Table Tennis Association, former vicechairman Nigerian Boxing Board of Control; was Managing Director Zik Enterprises Ltd., 1937-53; National President National Convention of Nigerian Citizens (NCNC), 1944-59, founder and former governing direc tor African Continental Bank Ltd., belongs to many professional and international organisations and has received several awards has published many works including "Liberia in World Politics" (1938), 'Renascent Africa", 'Political Blue-print of Nigeria" (1943), "Zik, A Selection of Speeches (1961), "My Odyssey" (1970), "Economic Reconstruction of Nigeria", 'Meditations" —A col lection of poems and "Treasury of West African poetry", initiated into the Ozo society of Onitsha and laterChieftaincy, becoming the Owelle of Onitsha. Married to Flora Ogoegbunam and has four children, three sons and a daughter. Address: Onuiyi Haven, Nsukka, Anambra State.
