WAZIRIN SHENDAM, MINISTER OF SOCIAL WELFARE & CO OPERATIVES Like many offormerNorthern RegionalMinisters, MichaelAudu Buba was atrained Teacher butdid notmake use of hisprofessionfor long before he entered the service ofhis Native Authority. Bom in 1924, Michael was brought up in a Mission. He was trainedfirst in Shendam, his hometown, and later atJos, Kafanchan, and Ibusa in theformer Western Region. Heentered the KCM.schoolatthe age of eight in 1932 in Shendam and was there up to 1938 when he because a Vernacular Teacher. The sameyear saw him atthe English Senior Primary School atJos. Hefinished up in 1942 at Kafanchan. In theyear 1943 he went back to his home, this time to be the Headmaster of his "alma mater1', the Shendam Vernacular Teachers Training School. Hegained admission in 1944 to St. Thomas' Normal College, Ibusa in theformer Western Nigeria. He came out as atrained Teacherin 1945andstartedteachingattheK CM. SchoolJos. The sameyear he was transferredto Pankshin. Hewas there up till 1946 when hejoinedthepublicservice. A somebody whofeltlike being more usefulandnearerto hispeople, Michaeljoinedthe ShendamNativeAuthority asChief Scribe in 1949 andin the same year, he startedpoliticalactivities byforming anNPCbranch in his town. Hewas also one ofthefoundation members ofthe AkweTribalUnion which wasformedthe sameyear, 1949. Hecontested the 1951 generalelections and was elected to theNorthern House ofAsembly. In 1952he was eleaed from theNorthem House to the House ofRepresentatives. Hispeople knew the valuefohisservicesto them andso by 1953 he was appointedthe Wa^iriofShendam andatthe same time became the Councillorin charge of Works in the LowlandFederal Native Authority. Hewas among the Native Authority Officials who benefitedfrom a British Council study tour of the UnitedKingdom in 1954. When he came back, he resignedhis seatinthe House of Representatives inSeptember 1954. In March 1, 1955, he was appointed the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of NaturalResources. When the Northern House ofAsembly was dissolved in 1956 he won anohter election on Oaober30 of the sameyearafter which he was re-appointedaParliamentary, Secretary, this time to theMinistry of Trade andIndustry
