Joshua Chibi Dariye was born on July 27, 1957 in Horop, Mushere, Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State. Joshua Dariye was a businessman before joining politics. He took over as Governor of Plateau State, Nigeria on May 29, 1999 under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He was re-elected for another four-year term beginning from May 2003.
In early October 2006, eight of the twenty-four state assembly members issued an impeachment notice against Dariye. In his defence, he stated that the notice was invalid as the eight did not form a quorum of the assembly. He was however impeached from office in November 2006.
Following his impeachment, his deputy, Michael Botmang, became the new Governor. He appealed his impeachment and an appeals court ordered his reinstatement as Governor. The Plateau State Government thereafter announced its intention to appeal to the Supreme Court.
In April 27, 2007, the Supreme Court rejected the appeal of the Plateau State Government and ordered the reinstatement of Joshua Dariye with immediate effect.
In the April 2011 elections, he was elected Senator for the Central Plateau under the platform of the Labour Party thereby defeating Dawuda Gowon of the PDP, the younger brother of former Head of State, Yakubu Gowon.
In 2015 elections, Joshua Dariye defected to the All Progressive Congress(APC) and thereafter contested for the Plateau Central Senatorial seat and won.
