Gambo Sawaba was bom in Sabon Gari Zaria in 1933 to anaturalised father and'Nupe Mother. Allber Education centered around the various Islamic Schook and the Tf Wada Primary School'Zaria between 1939 and 1945. AnyotherEducation, she hadacquiredthrough herassociation with the Northern EkmentsProgressive UnionNEPU.' As early as when she wasftfteen years old, Gambo Sawabajoined the political struggk. She had been impressed iytheaaorstnthestmggkforindepmdencefromcoknialruk andfreedomfrom kcal oppression. As ayoung politician, Gambo Sawaba boldly exhibited hera version to greed and oppression. She stoutly defended the rights of the weak and encouraged the spirit of live and kt live. As early as 1952, Gambo Sawaba asyoung as she was had been ekaedpresident of the women's wing of the Northern Ekments Progressive UnionNEPU. Since then the enigmatic woman showedthatsbe was anaturalchampion of human rights and asymbol of women liberation. Her task was not easy, given theperiodof her activism which wasa periodofabsolute male chauvinism, n-infonedby orthodoxy. At that time, it was taboofor awoman in Northern Nigeria to venture into activepolitics, butGambo Sawaba would not be daunted Fourteen times she was sent tojail and each time she came out, she felt stronger in herresolve to press further in herquestforpoliticalemancipationforall As Nationalism got further spurred by kcal conditions, Gambo Sawaba found herself more and more in activities aimed at educating the womenfolk as to their cultural, economic andpolitical rights. Gambo Sawaba'spoliticallife was alife of total commitment to tbe cause of women. She remainedapolitician through and through. Her activepolitical life saw her into the NEPUfrom 1949-1966, into the Great Nigeria Peopks Party (GNPP)from 1978-1983, in the Social Democratic Party (SDP)from 1991-1993. She died on Sunday 14th Oaober, 2001 in Zaria.
