Bola Tinubu, born in southwestern Nigeria, has had a controversial yet influential career. After studying in the U.S. and working as an accountant, he returned to Nigeria in the 1980s and became a political figure. Elected as a Lagos senator in 1992, Tinubu went into exile during General Sani Abacha’s regime, returning after Abacha’s death. He was elected governor of Lagos in 1999, serving two terms and earning a reputation for improving state finances and infrastructure. A powerful political figure, Tinubu helped form the All Progressives Congress (APC) and supported Muhammadu Buhari’s successful presidential bids. In 2023, Tinubu won Nigeria’s presidential election amid allegations of corruption, low voter turnout, and controversy over his fitness for office. He was sworn in on May 29, 2023.
