MINISTER OF TRADE AND INDUSTRY LATER MINISTER OF ESTABLISHMENTS AND TRAINING Alhaji Aliyu Turakin Za^au was bom in 1908 in the old Zaria city. He was educated at Zaria Provincial School 1915-23 and Katsina Training College 1923-28 where he obtained Middle Six Certificate. He was a Teacher with Zaria Middle School from 1928 to 1930. He taught at E.T.C Katsina on secondment from 1930 to 1931. From 1931 to 1936 he was at Zaria Middle School and was transferred to Kano Middle School from 1936 to 1937. He was posted to Zaria NA Treasury as Senior Accountant in 1937. He was promoted Clerk in Charge of Zaria NA. Central Offices from 1938-40. In 1940 he waspromotedto Supervisor of Works, P.W.D. inZariaNA He attended the Ibadan Conference on the review of Richards' Constitution in 1950. Alhaji Aliyu Turakin Za^au waselectedMemberof the House of Assembly in 1954 to fill the seat vacated by Alhaji Abubakar Imam and appointed Minister of Trade and Industry in 1955. He formally retiredfrom Zaria NA. in 1956 and was appointed Deputy Chairman Northern Region Development Corporation and later Chairman in 1957. Hewas awarded OBE in January, 1958. He was re-elected Member Northern House of Assembly in 1961 and resigned from NRDC in the same year. Also in the sameyearhe was appointed Minister of State. He later again became afull Minister in theMinistry of Establishment andTrainingin March 1965. After the January 1966 coup thatterminated'theirgovernmentandthe creation of States in 1967, Alhaji Aliyu was to serve the North Central State government as Chairman of the Scholarship Board. Alhaji Aliyu died on the 12* of January, 1974 in Zaria. He was one of the few Cabinet Ministers who defied the tense situation of the country to bravely attend the funeral ceremony of the great Sardauna of Sokoto Alhaji Sir Ahmadu Bello who together with some very important Nigerians was slain in the mindless and brutal coup of January, 1966
