(JARMAN GOMBE)CON FIRST MILITARY GOVERNOR, NORTH WESTERN STATE Usman Faruk was bom in Pindiga in the present Gombe State in 1933. His father died when Usman was onlyfouryears old. Despite a very difficult childhood, Usman Faruk started formal education at the Pindiga Ekmentary School in 1945 and finishedin 1948. He proceeded to the Bauchi Middk Schoolfrom 1948 to 1949. He was in the famous Barewa Colkge Zaria between 1949 and 1955. Not reknting, he went further to the School of Agriculture, Zaria in 1955, andin 1956 through determination found himself in the Nigerian Colkge of Arts, Science and Technokgy, Zaria till 1958. With this solid educational background, Usman Faruk who had always believed in hardwork sought a career in the Police Force. He went to the Nigerian Police Cadet Officers Colkge, Ike/a, Lagos in 1958 and was therefor oneyear laying as foundation for a life career that bkssomed into fullness with time. Later in 1961 he went to the Wakefield Detective Colkge, Yorkshire, England between 1961 and 1962. His honest devotion to handwork paid off instantly as his working experience in the Police will serve as a testimony. He rose rapidly from being the Regional Military officer for Northern Nigeria in 1963 to being the Provincial Police Officer in charge of the Zariaprovince between 1963 and 1964. Usman Faruk ako served in that capacity in Kabbaprovince in 1964. In the sameyear Usman Faruk, now a Detective Deputy Superintendent of Police was named the Commanding Officer in charge of X squad of the Central C.I.D. in Lagos, the outfit in charge of Anti-bribery offences which he helped'tofound'in June 1964. He served in this position till 1966. In 1967, he was made the Provincial Police Officer in charge of the Kaduna Capital Territory. It was from there that he was named the Military Governor of the North Western State of Nigerian as an Assistant Commissioner of Police. He served that administration until its ouster in 1975 when together with the otherMilitary Governors, he was retiredfrom service. Detective Police Officer Faruk will be remembered as the first Nigerian Police Detective to be responsibkforthe use of a tape recorder in the Nigerian Judiciary in 1960. As a civilian with vast experience to draw from, Alhaji Usman Faruk played his part in promoting devekpmental work in the country. He was the Chairman, Kaduna State Physical Security Committee, Chairman National Association of State Movements in Nigeria and Consultant for the Movement for the creation of Gombe State. During the Abacha administration, Alhaji Usman Faruk, was a member of the Federal Transition Implementation Committee. A grateful nation conferred on him the Honour of the Commander Of the Order of the Niger in October, 2003.
